Why is it Good for Kids to Train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

At a time where more and more children are sitting at home glued to screens, it is increasingly important to get them involved in a physical

activity. BJJ is a full body workout and is one of the best forms of exercise, it increases strength, cardo, and flexibility! It will positively impact your child in more way than just keeping active, below are just a few of these ways your child will benefit from training BJJ:

Learn Discipline and Respect

Learning techniques in BJJ forces children to pay attention, which builds on their discipline and focus. It’s a challenging sport, but our instructors make sure to keep it fun and interesting for kids to keep them focused. Some children have trouble following rules, but by training in jiu-jitsu they can see the benefits of doing as they are told when they feel a great sense of accomplishment as their skills improve and they begin to execute techniques successfully!

Respect is also exercised in every class, not only to their instructor when listening and following instructions, but also to their teammates. Children are taught to understand their partners’ limits in different techniques and to be respectful in winning and losing.

Respect and discipline are not just unlearned when they are off the mats, and these will carry across to all aspects of their lives.

Confidence through Learning Self-Defence

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we teach children how to neutralise and control situations where they may be at risk by using realistic scenarios and techniques that can be practised in the gym safely.

They are taught to never use their jiu-jitsu outside of the academy unless absolutely necessary. These skills are particularly important in the constant fight against bullying in children. As well as the physical jiu-jitsu techniques, we teach children to fight fire with water so they are able to diffuse a situation without it becoming physical. This helps them to develop the confidence to stand up for themselves and their friends and tackle any possible bullying in a safe and controlled way. A child with this overall understanding of how to defend themselves will have self-confidence like no other!

Making new friends!

We believe in Jiu-Jitsu for everyone, and this means all of our classes have a wide range of different people! Every time a child comes to a class, they are paired up with someone else which encourages them to work together with different children and as a team, helping them develop important social skills that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Not just a Body Workout

BJJ doesn’t just make kids work hard physically, but it also requires them to use their brains. Jiu-jitsu is like a game of chess, and children who train understand how to keep calm under pressure and solve the problems they face in logical ways. This can give them better decision making abilities in everyday life! Unlike other sports, kids aren’t just going through the motions when learning jiu-jitsu. The process of learning the techniques requires active listening and watching which helps to improve their overall concentration.

It can be overwhelming trying to pick which activity is best for your child, but no other can positively impact their life as much as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
